The RailGenArchive Banner

RailGenArchive is dedicated to preserving the era when it was still possible to travel the length and breadth of the British Rail network on locomotive‑hauled passenger trains, powered by a wide variety of classic traction.

This site is the official continuation of the 1980s Timewarp project, now expanded and curated by the RailGenArchive Group.
The objective of the project is to record, as accurately as possible, the movements of the BR locomotive fleet — with particular focus on the passenger services they worked across the entire network.

At present, the RailGenArchive database covers the years 1970–1999, containing over 1 million passenger workings. Additional years are included where data is available, and with your contributions the archive will continue to grow.

Here you will find

  • Comprehensive coverage — all locomotive classes and regions represented without bias.
  • Traceable sources — gen linked back to contributors, with many workings confirmed by multiple observers en-route.
  • Regular updates — the database is continually refined and expanded

With such a breadth of material, there is something here for every UK rail enthusiast of the period — whether you are a train spotter, photographer, haulage basher, or modeller.
